Top Shows in NYC: October, Halloween, Dracula

October undoubtedly comes with plans for Halloween and shows of Dracula are certain to hit the ballpark.  While most companies rush to bring onstage their version of the in-famous vampire, Chiara Ajkun – author of the choreographic collection The Originals – has created a ballet inspired to the true story of Vlad III Dracul, “Dracula”.

This visually stunning ballet tells of Dracula’s internal struggles, fierce battles and emotional dreams during the Night Attack at Targovishte (1462).

Shows on Friday, Saturday at 7:30 pm & Sunday at 2:00 pm, October 25-26-27, 2024 at The Ailey Citigroup Theater, 405 W 55 Street, NYC, NY 10019.

The Story of Dracula

In the region of the Balkans, kingdoms are succumbing to the Ottoman invasion, leaving Vlad III Dracul, voivode (or prince) of Walachia, standing alone against the aggressor. Raised as military leader and facing Sultan Mehmet II, known as The Conqueror, on the battlefield, Dracula is forced to choose between the country of his birth and the people of his upbringing. Enhancing the compelling storyline, Ajkun goes to great lengths to detail the contrast between cultures and delights with realistic fight scenes, romantic interplays, and a blend of intelligence and superstition, all brought to life by the exceptional performances of her dancers.

Chiara Ajkun sheds light on the legacy of Dracula inspired from historic events and legends that originate in folklore:

"the undying hero who in the moment of need will rise up and save the Romanian nation from destruction".

The Protagonists of Dracula

Sometimes ballet can be dry steps and dull pantomime and therefore unappealing to a broad audience. Chiara Ajkun’s ballet appeals to just about everyone. The dancers are engaging, the show is adrenaline pumping, and the acting allows for an immersive experience of the story.

Dracula is played by Klevis Tafaj, a powerful dancer with charismatic performance skills. From the battle scenes to tender love, Tafaj combines his exceptional dancing with beautiful nuances of emotional depth and physical prowess and delivers the complexity of his character in an unforgettable portrayal.

Dracula’s wife, Mina, is portrayed by a delicate Momoko Burbine engaging the audience in breathtaking duets. Tragic emotional exchanges highlight their humanity in the historical context.

Tafaj and Burbine originated the roles for Chiara Ajkun’s premiere in 2016. Playing Dracula was pivotal for their careers and paved their way for their international recognitions with tours in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Europe. Top Shows in NYC

ABDURAH RAHMAN – DANCE WRITER

Hey there, I'm Abdurah Rahman from Afghanistan. Ballet has always been a passion of mine, but pursuing it hasn't been easy in my part of the world. I immersed myself in countless YouTube videos, admiring performances from the Royal Ballet, American Ballet and Australian Ballet, and falling in love with dancers like Marianela Núñez and Maria Khoreva. Eventually, I moved to the United States of America in the great city of New York to pursue journalism. I finally had the opportunity to experience live ballet shows and discovered the Ajkun Ballet Theatre. I love ballet but not all ballets. While big companies have large promotional budgets, it doesn't always guarantee the best shows. The Ajkun Ballet Company, on the other hand, delivers exceptional performances that truly touch, excite and captivate the audience.  Here you can find my take on their top shows in NYC. Enjoy!
